‘Peninsula’ by Tim O’Neill

Tim O Neill

I had my good friend Tim back in the Studio over Christmas time. He had a great new song written ‘Peninsula’, but this time wanted to back it with a drum loop rather than a regular acoustic pattern. There was a great Talking Heads track in which he really liked the drum loop. Rather than just sample it, I painstakingly recreated it with BFD3 using an acoustic kit, and a UAD 1176 and a Fatso Jr .

It also gave me an opportunity to try out my brand new VST3 plug in I designed ‘MAJOR CHORDS‘.

The bass guitar, acoustic guitar and electric guitar are all ‘played’ and controlled with the MAJOR CHORDS plugin in HALion Sonic 3 in Cubase.

Tim added his vocals, some electric guitar on my 335 and a pignose feedback experiment for the middle 8 (pictured below).

I also added hammond organ, piano, strings, brass, pads and harmony backing vocals.

We mixed it until Tim was happy and here is the finished track. See what you think? Let us know.

Really pleased to announce the prototype of my first Halion Instrument is ready for testing. ‘Major Chords’ is a guitar sampler that can be used with Halion Sonic SE, Halion Sonic 3 or Halion 6 in any version of Cubase (or any DAW that will load vst3). You have a multi sampled Gibson Les Paul Standard going into a Kemper, a Gibson EB14 Bass Guitar also going into a Kemper and a Mic’d up Gibson J45 acoustic Guitar to play with. You can play them individually or in unison and you can automate each one to get them to play any chord sample you like. Each instrument has its own designated effects, pan, volume and Eq, so you can customise the sound to your liking. Leave a comment if you’d like to know more.🎸🎼❤️🎚️🎹 #majorchords #bigcloudproductions #vst3 #VSTS #halion #halionsonic3 #halionsonic #halion6 #steinberg #cubase #samples #guitars #gibson #kemper #lespaul #j45 #bass #akg414 #daw #studiolife #vsti #Liverpoolstudio #producersofinstagram

New Songs by Tim O’Neill

Tim O Neill

Had the pleasure of welcoming Tim O’Neill back to the studio recently to work on two brand new compositions.

Tim arrived with two new songs he wanted to record and played them to me acoustically before telling me what kind of instrumentation he wanted on the tracks.

This is usually how it works with Tim, he’ll come round and strum a song out and I’ll make a note of the chord structure and what tempo he wants. (There’s usually a bit of metronome action at this point to drill down the bpm).

We’ll then record his acoustic guitar part and a guide vocal and Tim will then tell me what else he wants on the track. He’ll give me examples of drum beats or sounds he likes, examples of guitar sounds he wants me to try and capture and some basic instrumentation ideas. (“Drums, bass, hammond, strings on the chorus etc”).

Then I’ll lay down the extra parts and any ideas I’ve had and do a rough mix for him. He’ll then make some notes about what he likes and doesn’t like then come back in to do a finished vocal, and backing vocal parts and then I’ll add any of his thoughts and do a final mix before Mastering.

A nice touch was Tim brought his daughter Aniela to the session to add some backing vocals on Krokodil.

So, here’s the two new tracks. See what you think? Let us know.

Video Production: ‘The Only One’ by Desert Fathers

I completed work on a Video project for ‘Desert Fathers’ today, a great 2014 track they had already recorded. I actually feature on the track on Electric guitar (I did some session work for them at the time.)

We used bought some stock timelapse footage and set up the text as per Tim and Graeme’s request. I think it looks great and it’s a beautiful song. See what you think?

Song Production : ‘At The Door’ by Tim O’Neill

Big Cloud Productions

Yet another fantastic solo track by Tim O’Neill.  We recently finished the ‘Tincture O’ project ‘Needle Change X’ together with Lisa Von H and we were really pleased with how that turned out.
This particular track, called ‘At The Door’ was less of a collaboration than Needle Change X, as Tim had the song already written in full when he first came into the studio. In fact he first played it live, here on the Big Cloud Podcast. Have a look below.

So we set about recording it again, but this time after discussions with Tim, I added some extra Acoustic Guitar, Drums, Bass, Slide Guitar and a picked electric guitar part, Piano and Organ.

To be honest, we probably tracked too many different ideas to begin with. The fantastic, sparse and intimate track was in danger of getting lost under the weight of too many instruments.
Sensing danger, we decided to pull back a bit and we ended up with a simpler, but much stronger arrangement.

Tim and I both preferred the stripped back version to the ‘kitchen sink’ mix, so we were back in business.

I really love this song. It’s now stripped back to just Tim’s vocals, his acoustic guitar part (great btw) with me accompanying him on Bass, Drums, Organ and Slide with some backing vocals.

Here is the finished mix of our studio version Produced by Steve Stroud @ Big Cloud Productions.

Song Production : Needle Change X by Tincture O feat. Lisa Von H

Liverpool singer/songwriter Tim O’Neill came into the studio recently to work on a new project.  He wanted to record a new song he’d written and produce a music video for it also. I’ve done some video work last summer on the big cloud podcast, so I was happy to give it a go.

We recorded the song first. A fantastic, textured track which lyrically spoke about the greed of the western political systems. The track was rich, but seemingly open to a lot of experimentation. Tim already had the basic song, chords, lyrics and melody written before he came into the studio, but he wanted me to create some kind of intro and coda to help frame the track.

I recorded some vocal lines, reversed them, then looped them over the radio static and the specific audio samples that Tim had already suggested.

I then added guitars, pianos, synths, bass and drums before writing and arranging a string and brass part which I then reversed on the breakdown at the end of the choruses.

Tim also had the great idea of accentuating the verse with dramatic stabs of strings. I added an overdriven guitar to these parts too.

Once the song was almost complete, Tim decided he’d like to have some female vocals on there too. There’s really nobody better than Lisa Von H for this and we were both really pleased when she agreed to contribute a vocal to the project. She even graciously agreed to send us some footage for the video that was still yet to be made.

It goes without saying she did an amazing job as always. Her previous work with us on another one of Tim’s songs ‘Honey’s Dead’ remains one of my favourite production moments.

Once the track was complete, we recorded some footage of Tim in the studio for the video and he also recorded some himself at home. That, along with Lisa’s footage and some visual samples Tim suggested made up the bulk of the Video. I just added the old, black and white footage, the eye shot and then pieced it all together.

Tim graciously offered me a co writing credit due to the work I did on the intro and the outro and the rest of the song, I really appreciated it, but I must say the bulk of the song was already written before I even touched it, so it was very generous of him.

Finally he wanted to call the project ‘Tincture O’ rather than release it as a Tim O’ Neill solo record as I think he felt it was a more collaborative project, with Lisa and Myself’s input.

So here is the finished video and song. Please let us know if you enjoyed it and get in touch if you would like to be a part of a similar project.

Song Production : ‘Burn’ by Tim O’Neill

Another fantastic solo track by Tim O’Neill.  We’ve worked a lot together now and Tim is obviously one of my favourite singer songwriters, I’m not just talking about local songwriters, but songwriters in general. I really think he’s very talented. He brings a real depth and clarity to his songs, which are always expertly crafted and the lyrics are always first class. It’s a pleasure to work with an unsigned songwriter like Tim and help him bring his music to life.

Here is the first mix of our studio version Produced by Steve Stroud @ Big Cloud Productions.

Song Production : ‘The Remix Project’ by Tim O’Neill

Big Cloud Productions - Audio Production for Songwriters

Tim decided to revisit some of his older original songs, so we treated it as a project (Song Production : ‘The Remix Project’ by Tim O’Neill) and remixed and remastered 3 songs at the studio in Liverpool in July 2015. I think we’ve improved on quite a few things. See what you think?

Song Production : ‘Hunger Games’ by Tim O’Neill

Big Cloud Productions - Audio Production for Songwriters

Another gem by the ex Magic Bullets frontman Tim O’Neill.

The fourth song of our ongoing collaboration is ‘Hunger Games’, a really strong track, written by Tim with all his usual intelligence overflowing with thoughtful lyrics, artistic chord changes and at least fourty fathoms of depth.

The last session we did together ended up producing the glorious ‘Honey’s Dead’, which we recorded with Lisa Von H. Everyone involved was very pleased with that track so we wanted to make sure we came back strong. The result is ‘Hunger Games’.

What started as a rich, but sparse acoustic guitar driven track was transformed by both Tim’s suggestions and also, (I like to think) our own musical input.
Tim wanted to utilise the world famous Amen drum break somewhere in the song and also had great ideas for backing vocals and bass. So I started working on getting the right drum beat and sound.
I laid down the acoustic rhythm, after studying tim’s initial demo and then the bass was recorded DI with my brand new Gibson EB14 bass, which was lovely to play with btw. I then added wah, wah guitar, backwards guitar lines and started arranging the strings. Tim then had the genius idea of getting us to add some flutes.
After one more brainstorming session with Tim, where we added some more vocal harmonies, guitar and synth parts. We believed we’d cracked it!

It’s always a real pleasure working with a true craftsman and talented songwriter such as Tim. This kind of session is exactly what Big Cloud Productions is all about. And on a personal note, it’s great to end Big Clouds time in the Eslington Street studio on a high. We’re now packing up our gear and moving to a brand new studio set up in leafy Woolton.

Anyway, have a listen to the finished mix. We think it’s boss.
